A hair-buying machine installed in supermarkets, train stations and similar places. After scanning an ID, the user places freshly cut hair into a transparent chamber. The machine tests for drug, dye and heavy-metal residues, assigns a raw-material grade, and makes an offer in about a minute. Once the offer is accepted, the machine prints an appraisal slip listing the weight, test results, grade and amount; the slip is exchanged for cash at the store counter. Standard-grade hair fetches NT3pergram;dyedorpermedhair,aboutNT0.5. Most people drop their hair in on the way home from a haircut. A short trim brings in about NT$30. It is not much, but throwing cut hair away is considered wasteful. Many also treat the test results on the slip as a free health check along the way. Machines from different buyers often stand side by side, with prices that fluctuate with the market.
Installed by private processors and hair buyers, the machines look much alike from one operator to the next: a free-standing body in white and grey with flat, even surfaces. The screen sits at the top of the front, with an ID scanner and camera beside it to confirm that the hair belongs to the person depositing it. In the middle is a transparent chamber; once the hair is placed inside and the door is closed, testing begins, and the hair stays visible in the chamber while the user waits. The chamber takes one person’s hair at a time. When testing is done, the hair is moved straight into the machine, and the chamber is left empty again.
